Why I Don't Vote

The other day I upset KT because she found out I am not voting in the presidential election. Am I not patriotic? Am I not an American? Eagles are the national bird of the United States, but Eagles fly in Canada too, are they filled with American pride? To the contrary, I feel I am patriotic and American because I choose not to vote. I don’t have to go into my history of service in the Army and thus far, in law enforcement. I know all too well the amount of blood that was shed for the patch on my arm. The blood that was shed however was for freedom, the freedom to choose. It is my choice not to choose.

Thus far, both candidates have been doom and gloom and overwhelmingly negative. They have attacked each other on issue after issue, they rallied the people behind Republican or Democrat, Conservative or Liberal, and they have not sought a middle ground. These politics, every politician for that matter, has done nothing but polarize the country between Left and Right, more so lately, with the attitude of “I’m right and you’re wrong,” not that “I respect your difference in opinion.”

Point number 1, Ignorance. President Bush for example, although he is not my favorite President, I do feel he has not had fair representation. I feel that those who have the real power in the country; sports stars, movie stars, faux media programs and gossip magazines, have labeled him and others in politics as failures. This message then propagates throughout the United States through water cooler talk and heresay. The next thing you know, what started out as a lampoon is taken as the gospel and the truth. Therefore leading to the psychological phenomena of the “band-wagon effect;” the feeling that if everyone feels the same way, then it must be right.

Point number 2, Blame. If everyone points the finger to the Executive branch and to the President and everyone talks about a dismal 28% approval rating, then what about the 12% approval rating of Congress? What about the failure and inability to act on the issues that they were elected to change: gas prices, the Iraq War, terrorism and the economy? What about the only major act of legislation they have thus far, passed was a non-binding resolution to protest the Iraq war. Are the troops home as they promised? Are we still paying $3+ for gas? Is the Army still fighting Al Qaeda? Is the economy teetering on the brink? There is only so much the Executive Branch can do. There is only so much the Legislative Branch can do. There is only so much the Judicial Branch can do. It is spelled out in the constitution in black and white; the separation of powers, not one branch has more power than the other. Therefore, how can it be any one politician’s fault that the United States is perceived as weak.

Point number 3, Perception. Perception is everything, if a candidate or the TV, or a celebrity says the economy is going under, the War on Terror is going badly or someone releases a top ten list poking fun of a person or policy, people will take that literally and not read between the lines. The truth of the matter is that things are not as bad as they seem. With regard to the mainstream media, remember that they are a business and their business is to make money, with that said, every measure must be taken to find out the story for one’s self, not just take things @ face value. Afterall, one should never believe someone who makes money by providing bad news.

Point number 4, Patronize. Republican and Democrat, are on the same page with most issues. If one reads the points from both of their websites and researches their issues, they will find they are in agreement with the major issues that affect the United States. They do differ slightly, but not enough to make a difference. Therefore, no matter who is elected, things will change. What is different about the candidates is that they deliver their points differently, and rally people behind the faux institutions of Republican OR Democrat, Conservative OR Liberal, With OR Against me. They run negative campaign ads because it is all the voter will react to, they say things that make no sense and are grossly inflated all for my vote. If the ads and the campaigning didn't talk down to me, maybe I would get out and vote for one of them.

The public in turn, eats this up, rallies behind their favorite candidate, becomes rude and disrespectful of the other side and further polarizes the country. True, there is something wrong, but it is with them and most who elect them do so on the basis of ignorance. People are fickle, whatever they are fed through the television, their podcasts, their blogs, their radio and god-forbid, they actually read printed media, they will believe. Kang, the space alien from The Simpsons, said it best with regards to the public and the public’s view on elections and issues”

Kang: “Abortions for none!”
Rallying Crowd: “Boo!”
Kang: “Abortions for all!”
Rallying Crowd: “Boo!”
Kang: “Ok, abortions for some, tiny American flags for others.”
Rallying Crowd: “Yeah!”

More seriously, what scares me most is what Benjamin Franklin said: “No outside power, no foreign country will ever defeat the United States. What will tear the country apart will be the citizens themselves.” It is for that reason that I don’t vote.

I'm Still Here

Many think I am not doing my blog any more. To the contrary, it is still up and running, I am still going to put on new articles, even though they will be more infrequent than they usually are. Just to bring you up on speed, I am back from MA, I was selected for the Crime Analyst position and now I am working downtown on a counter-terrorism analysis center. Life has been pretty fun and pretty exciting, although it has been hard. I am trying to get back into the swing of things at home and switch my schedule from working during the nights to working during the days. I have so much going on, I have to complete my departmental transfer, complete my KCMO transfer, start making dinners again, fix everything that is broken and get my body more used to staying awake during the daytime. Furthermore, I am doing drill this weekend and will not have a day off until next weekend, and I have to complete my travel voucher, the last one was a lot of fun. Anyway, there is a lot going on, but it is all good stuff and they are all good changes.

?

I have been gone a long time now. Not really that long, but two weeks is long enough. It is just the right amount of time to be gone to start saying I have been gone a while. Anyway, I am back at work now. Is it a bad thing that when a 911 call comes in in the middle of the night, I know whether it will be a medical call or a police call? Or worse yet, is it a bad thing I know if we actually need to go with the ambulance to a call? I am tired, therefore this entry will not be too exciting. It is 4:16am and there is so much more to do. I balanced the checkbook, printed off Army papers for a travel voucher, answered numerous calls, read KT's blog and read written directives. I still have to send her a cereal list. Anyway, I will log off and type more later when I am not so tired. Oh yah, and I paid bills.

ETS

I am at work right now, which means I have time to surf and check on things I don’t really need to check on. So, tonight I went to read the digital version of my Army file online. Low and behold, it told me I have exactly 365 days until my Expiration of Time of Service, otherwise known as an ETS. That’s crazy I can technically leave the Army on 09/03/09. Of course, I will re-enlist, I enjoy the Army too much not to, plus I will not reap all of the benefits I have received thus far. What is crazy to me, is that I can remember back when I was in the Guard, Soren Schmidt laughed when I told him my ETS was in 2009, and that was in 2003. Back then, I thought that was forever. Back then, I was a Specialist, along with Soren Schmidt, Keith Falkner, Ed Brock and Chris Myer. Back then, I had aspirations to be a commissioned officer through the state OCS program by 2004. By 2009, I was hoping to be an armor Captain in charge of one of the 635th’s tank companies.

Now, it is 2009 and I am a Staff Sergeant in a Strategic Intelligence Group, looking to obtain a Warrant Officer commission through a federal OCS program. I am no longer in combat arms, no longer on the tanks and no longer in a traditional Army line unit.
I am now in a non-traditional, strategic intelligence combat support unit. We produce intelligence for plain-clothed civilians. We regularly read “spy” (for lack of a better term) reports, decipher satellite images and write reports and give briefings; work that is vastly different from driving, loading, gunning and commanding tanks.

Do I regret any of this? Not at all, I have been very busy since 2003, and have, for the most part, maintained an upward career trek. There was some time as SGT that I floundered and stagnated, but that was during my transfer and subsequent training in a 2nd MOS. I can only hope now, that I will have the time, energy and motivation to put in a packet for WOCS, and get my bar. Or, if I get deployed again, I will go overseas choosing to do the job I signed up for, not one I was thrust into, like when I was a tanker turned infantryman.

If I Were an American Idol

Someday, I would like to start a punk band.

I would like to start a punk band that has inaudbile lyrics, that plays short, fast and loud. We would be using nothing more than three chords in songs that last no more than a few seconds. Maybe there would be a drum intro or a base interlude. One thing is for sure, there would be no solos, only single note guitar riffs thrown into a song here and there to break up the monotony. I would call my band The Ted Kennedys or Class Suspect. Jello Biafra would be my effigy and Kurt Cobain my figurehead. I would pick a fight with Henry Rollins, get an autograph from Jerry Only and give the middle finger to Metallica.

I would drape an American flag over our touring gear, the red, white and blue would be the only color on our black stage and black amps. We would wear black suits and ties w/ white shirts and dark sunglasses. We would look like cast rejects from a Tarantino movie. We would perform in a moderately-sized concert hall behind a chain link fence. We would be a trio, nothing more, nothing less. No fancy drum kits or machines, no frilly keyboards, no lead guitar. Just the three of us.

I would perform with my back constantly facing the crowd only to turn around for the occasional acknowlegment. Our shows would be simple, get on stage, get off stage. No commercials, no product placement, no thanking the opening act, no words, just one song after the other, straightforward and to-the-point. If we did a good job and the audience wanted an encore, I would return to the stage only to retrieve my guitar, so that no one would steal it. We would tune our own guitars and set up our stage. We would play behind red spot lights that shine behind us, perhaps a stroble light facing out toward the crowd would be in order.

In the end, we would be nothing more than a no-name, talentless, rip off punk band playing the same three recycled chords every other punk band played before us. However, we would be different, we would play the same three chords, but we would play them in the wrong order.

The Wait

10 long days. 10 long days until I find out if I got the position I applied for. What will happen in between then and now? Lets see, Saturday, I am going to eat dinner with my in-laws, that should be fun. Sunday, I am going on a special date night with KT to a drive-in. I have to mow the lawn and organize our files. I have to prepare for my Boston trip and keep in shape these last couple of days before my PT test. I haven't worked out for the past 5 days and now I have to make up for it. Hopefully, time will fly by over these next 10 days. Not that I want to leave KT in any way, I just wanna know the result of my interview.
